The overskirts on sale in the dress shop near the Dam were much more expensive than I had expected. Even buying the material and making the skirt myself would hardly leave me enough to buy a jacket. It wasnât that I was bothered by having to make it myself, after all, it was the result that mattered â that was what needed to be good. I was buying new clothes for a reason and I wanted to be comfortable in them. I hoped that if I had something beautiful to wear, I would no longer feel the need to immediately make myself useful whenever Monsieur, Borgholt or a customer appeared and glanced in my direction; I would have the confidence to simply stand my ground. I still had to dress as befits a maid, but within those constraints I aimed to find subtle ways of showing my good taste.
I searched through several dress and fabric shops but everything was too expensive. Just when I was about to return home, I passed a shop that was only a single window wide. I went in and found an old woman serving behind the counter. After I had explained what I was looking for, she disappeared into the back room and returned with some dark-green material. âIf I were you, I would take this. Believe me, Iâve worked here forty years. I know it the moment someone steps in.â
I felt the material between thumb and index finger. Good quality, thick enough for the winter, affordable. To better judge the colour, I stepped up to the window. It was even more beautiful than I had thought. The fabric actually seemed to shimmer a little. It would go well with a greyish-green jacket that matched my eyes. I checked that I had enough money with me and asked the shop assistant to cut the material into lengths.
